Introduction:
The G20, short for the Group of Twenty, is a prestigious international forum that brings together the world’s major economies to address global economic and financial challenges. Comprising 19 individual countries ,the European Union & now the African Union, the G20 plays a pivotal role in shaping global economic policies and fostering international cooperation. However, one notable absence from this elite group is Israel. Despite being a technologically advanced and economically significant nation, Israel has not been granted membership in the G20. In this article, we will explore the key reasons behind Israel’s exclusion from this influential forum.
Geopolitical Tensions:
One of the primary reasons behind Israel’s exclusion from the G20 is the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Israel’s relations with several countries in the region, particularly its conflict with the Palestinians, have resulted in strained diplomatic ties with numerous G20 members. These tensions have made it challenging for Israel to gain support for its inclusion in the group.
Regional Politics:
The G20 often operates on a regional representation basis, with several regions having dedicated seats at the table. The European Union, for example, represents its member states collectively. Israel’s unique position in the Middle East complicates its regional representation, as it is not part of a formal regional bloc like the European Union or ASEAN. This makes it more difficult for Israel to secure a place within the G20.
Limited Economic Size:
While Israel boasts a strong and innovative economy, it is relatively small in terms of GDP compared to the current G20 members. The G20 was originally established as a forum for the world’s largest economies to address global economic issues. Israel’s economy, while robust, does not match the sheer size of economic powerhouses like the United States, China, or Germany, which are part of the G20.
Lack of Global Role:
Membership in the G20 is not solely determined by a country’s economic prowess but also by its global role and contributions. Many G20 members are not only economically significant but also play pivotal roles in addressing global challenges, such as climate change, terrorism, and pandemics. Israel’s exclusion may be partly due to the perception that it does not have as broad a global impact as some of the existing G20 members.
Diplomatic Challenges:
Diplomatically, Israel faces challenges in securing the support of a sufficient number of G20 members for its inclusion. While some countries advocate for Israel’s participation, others remain hesitant due to regional politics and historical conflicts. This diplomatic balancing act has hindered Israel’s efforts to join the G20.
Conclusion:
Israel’s exclusion from the G20 is a complex issue influenced by a combination of geopolitical tensions, regional dynamics, economic factors, and diplomatic challenges. While Israel has a strong and innovative economy, it has not yet been able to secure a seat at the G20 table. Whether or not Israel will eventually gain membership in this influential international forum depends on a variety of factors, including the resolution of regional conflicts and the evolving dynamics of global diplomacy.
India’s role under the Modi government to let Israel join G 20 is part of the Modi govt. Agenda heading G 20 at present. The joining can take place post 2024 elections as INDIA & BHARAT both have no objections to Israeli entry in G20.
G7 which is the parent body of G20 was primarily formed to check Oil rich nations refusal to sell oil to Israel friendly countries in 1973 under US leadership.
The other question is why Pakistan is not invited even as guest to G-20 ? Obviously G 20 is a gang of economies that are pro-Israel so how can Pakistan be part of it untill Pakistan embeds ISRAEL in near future ? .
